Misdemeanor
A misdemeanor is a criminal offense that can be punished by fines and jail, not prison. There are three classes of misdemeanors.
- Class A: Punishable by up to 364 days in a county jail and $2500 in fines
- Class B: Punishable by up to 180 days in a county jail and $1500 in fines
- Class C: Punishable by up to 30 days in a county jail and $1500 in fines
There is also the possibility of Court Supervision, conditional discharge, and probation as well as a straight conviction. Sentences can involve Public Service Work, Work Release, stayed jail time, treatment for anger, psychological, substance or alcohol abuse, as well as countless others.
Some common examples of misdemeanors are Domestic Battery, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis, Illegal consumption of alcohol, battery, assault, Criminal Trespass, Criminal Damage to Property, and Theft.
Your prior record can also be a big influence. Many misdemeanor offenses can be elevated to felony level offenses based on a prior record.
